Pearl Information Guide

Caring for your Pearl

Pearls are relatively soft – less than 4 on the Mohs scale of hardness and they can be scratched by any objects which are harder than they are and, if worn constantly, they will gradually abrade away. This should not deter the potential purchaser; good quality South Sea pearls, if cared for correctly, should give joy for several generations. But how should one care for pearls?

Pearls should be stored in a separate soft pouch to prevent the surface being scratched or damaged by contact with harder stones or other jewellery. Avoid contact with products which may damage your pearls. Vinegar, ammonia, chlorine, bleach, hairspray and perfume can cause damage to the surface of pearls. Some commercial jewellery cleaners and many household cleaning products contain ammonia and these should be avoided. Always apply perfume, cosmetics and hairspray prior to putting on your pearls.

Perspiration can also damage pearls, so it is wise to remove them if you are doing strenuous exercise. The stringing of strands of pearls should be checked regularly and they should be rethreaded if there is any sign of the thread fraying.

It is advisable to wipe your pearls with a soft, damp cloth after you have worn them, particularly if you have been perspiring. Pearls can also be washed in a mild soapy water, rinsed in fresh water and towel dried.
